Foster Care Individuals
El Camino College, Compton Center – Foster & Kinship Care
Education Program for Youth and Care Providers
The Foster and Kinship Education Program offers classes for
adults providing foster care services and for youth ages 14 to 21
living in out-of-home. The adult classes provide workshops to ensure
licensed and prospective foster and kinship caregivers can meet a
child’s needs, including the educational, emotional, behavioral, and
developmental needs of children placed in out-of-home care. Classes
for youth, called YESS, help them transition to independent,
emancipated living.
The adult programs focus on:
- D-Rate Certification pre-services for children that exhibit
severe emotional and behavioral problems.
- F-Rate Certification pre-services for children with special
medical conditions
- Renewal Classes for licensed foster parents and kinship
caregivers to keep their certifications up to date.
- Whole family foster Care for families parenting teens with
children.
- PSMAPP (Partnering for Safety and Permanence Model Approach
to Partnerhips in Parenting) for prospective foster parents.
The YESS Youth Programs are offered to qualifying foster youth
referred to the Compton Center by their social workers who contact
the Compton Center. The YESS program serves foster youth ages 14-21
in two categories:
- Tutoring: Students are eligible for tutoring on a
case-by-case evaluation to assist them in passing the High
School Exit Exam.
- Life Skills: Classes are designed for youth 16-21 years of
age, providing experiential learning opportunities that develop
life skills they can utilize in their walk toward adulthood, and
assist foster youth with transitioning out of the system.
